Let’s Talk Online Therapy: Getting the most out of Online Therapy
What is online therapy?
Online Therapy, TeleMental Health, TeleTherapy, Telehealth Video Therapy or Online Psychotherapy are common terms for therapy online. Most Telehealth is over a video, but could also be on the phone, texting or other services that are not provided in person. Online therapy is becoming more popular and is shown to be as effective as in person therapy for many.
Here are 5 ways to make the most out of your online session:
1. Let your therapist know if you feel uncomfortable or disconnected in a session.
Some might think online therapy is a little a strange or worry about being able to connect with your therapist on a computer; however, worrying about the connection with your therapist is a very normal concern about therapy in general. Your session is your time and your therapist is there to help you feel comfortable and address any concerns about the therapy process.
2. Find or create a private comfortable place for your session.
You want to have your session in a place that you know others will not be able to hear you. One idea is to put a sound machine outside the door. You also want to be comfortable, sitting in a comfortable spot can help you overall relax.
3. Set aside time
Part of the convenience of online therapy is being able to do it anytime, but make sure you actually have time. Plan to be 5-10 min early to your therapy spot, sometimes connecting and getting set up can take a few minute and you do not want to feel rushed or be late (there is no I was stuck in traffic excuse). It would be best if you can have some down time after, some sessions can be emotional.
4. Avoid places with distractions or try to minimize distractions
If you are at home or work put up a do not disturb sign. Lock the door so people or your children do not come in. Its best to put animals out of the room as they can be distracting and try to get your attention.
5. Use headphones
Using headphones can help you stay focused and increases privacy. Some therapist themselves will use headphone.
